Segmenting with sound cards
Step 1 - Choose a CVC word and lay out the 3 sounds used in a random order.
- Say the word, can they hear the first sound? Move that up.
- The adult says the word and stretches the word out slowly, can they hear any more sounds? They will usually hear the end sound before the middle. That's fine, move that one up (leave a gap)
- Cover the final sound and stretch the word again, see if they can hear the middle sound.
Step 2 - The same as above, but you can make it more challenging by having extra sounds which are not in the word.
Do not worry if they are not yet hearing all the sounds; keep practicing and they will come. We always get the initial sound first, then the end and finally the middle.
